Aftermarket Wheels: Buying and Fitting Them

By: TROY BACON

If you are not satisfied with performance of your car, you can improve it by going for the aftermarket wheels. They will not only improve power in terms of acceleration but also enhance the look and feel. You can fit them by hiring a mechanic or do it yourself. All leading car brands have aftermarket wheels. The aftermarket wheels of Chevy Silverado are made of high quality alloys and metals. These Chevy Silverado wheels are also cheaper compared to factory made wheels as the huge advertisement costs are added to these. The same goes for Hummer. You can get the Hummer wheels that are suitable for the activities you want to use your vehicle for.

The aftermarket wheels are available in various colors like chrome, black, red, blue, white, and many more. However when you go to buy these wheels, do not purchase the first set that strike your eyes. Ensure that the bolt pattern and tire size is compatible to your vehicle. When looking for such wheels it is a good idea to browse the online stores. You will get good deals there that will help you make substantial savings.

After you purchase the wheels, it’s time to fit them. You can do it yourself if you have the right tools with you. You will require aftermarket tires, aftermarket rims, tire-mounting machine, tire-mounting lubricant, new lug nuts, water, baking soda, car jack, tire iron, torque wrench and balancing machine.

You can go to a tire shop with new tires and rims to mount the tires. Before that you should ensure that the tires and rims are of compatible sizes and specifications. But if you have the tools you can mount them yourself too. You can follow the guidance of the manufacturer to carry on the task properly. To prevent scratching of the rims, always use the adapters for aluminum rims and pads.

Use baking soda and water to wash the lug nuts and the stud threads. Thereafter thoroughly check for any damages, corrosion, rust or burns in them. Keep the threads free of any lubricant to ensure that they do not come out during a drive. There is a need to ensure that the lug nut is appropriate for the seat of stud threads. If you have any query, you can take the suggestion from wheel experts other than the dealer from whom you have purchsed the rims. New lug nuts should be used with new rims.

Now the existing wheel from the front of a car should be removed with a tight iron and a jack. One of the aftermarket wheels can be installed with the help of lug nuts with the rims. Then tighten the lug nuts with a torque wrench in a zigzag pattern to ensure uniform pressure.

Take hold of the steer to turn the car in the right and the left direction to the full to see if the wheels are getting rubbed against the fender wall or the suspension. If so remove the wheel. Follow the same process for the other front wheel. Similarly fix the rare wheels.
